Rose loves Dimitri, Dimitri might love Tasha, and Mason would die to be with Rose...

It’s winter break at St. Vladimir’s, but Rose is feeling anything but festive. A massive Strigoi attack has put the school on high alert, and now the Academy’s crawling with Guardians—including Rose’s hard-hitting mother, Janine Hathaway. And if hand-to-hand combat with her mom wasn’t bad enough, Rose’s tutor Dimitri has his eye on someone else, her friend Mason’s got a huge crush on her, and Rose keeps getting stuck in Lissa’s head while she’s making out with her boyfriend, Christian! The Strigoi are closing in, and the Academy’s not taking any risks... This year, St. Vlad’s annual holiday ski trip is mandatory.

But the glittering winter landscape and the posh Idaho resort only create the illusion of safety. When three friends run away in an offensive move against the deadly Strigoi, Rose must join forces with Christian to rescue them. But heroism rarely comes without a price...

My Rating:

My Thoughts:

I LOVED this book, just like the first one! I'm excited to continue this series because I've been told that they only get better! (How is that possible?)

This is the second book in a series so it may be hard for me to talk about this book without giving away some spoilers.. you've been warned.

What did you all think of Janine Hathaway? I feel like there's so much more to her story that we haven't heard of yet. I feel like Rose's father will play a bigger part in this story later as well. In a way I feel like Rose was being really immature, and cruel to her mom.. but then again, all she sees is a woman that abandoned her. I know that they are both tough women, but I can't believe she gave Rose a black eye!

There was so much more blood and battle in this book, such as the massacre. Ugh. That was awful.. I'm glad Dimitri was the one there with Rose though.. Rose has definitely seen enough horror in this book to last her a lifetime.. Unfortunately for her, I'm sure she will be seeing much more in the future...

What do you think about Rose and Lissa's bond? It's one thing to get a wave of feelings from another person, and a whole other thing to have to basically be transferred into their head. She didn't even like Christian and next thing she knows, it's basically Rose lying there making out with him. That's enough to make anyone lose their mind..

It's funny because this book is about so much more than Rose and Dimitri's love story.. but I was SO frustrated with the whole Tasha thing.. It sucked because Dimitri actually seemed really happy around her.. I'm really happy that he didn't go with her obviously.

Of course I didn't like Adrian in this book at all... well towards the end he was sorta helpful with the dreams (which was super interesting). He just seemed like a sleaze though. I'm sure we will be seeing much more of him..

Speaking of that ending.. woah. Just woah. I'm still angry at Rose for not telling anyone about Mason and them running away.. Also, WHY didn't they just meet at the mall AND GET THE HECK OUT OF THERE! I knew something bad was going to happen.. It's one thing to hear about Strigoi and another to be face to face with one. Those chapters were awful.. poor Eddie.. I guess they were just kind of stunned and feeling hopeless but I couldn't believe that they hadn't thought of Christian using his magic before..I was practically yelling at him. When the others escaped, but then Mason came back I had such a heavy feeling in my heart.. I really liked Mason, not that I thought that he should be with Rose instead of Dimitri, but still. I can't believe he was killed right in front of Rose. I was so proud of her and Mia though. Imagine the horror of a huge wall of water surrounding your face constantly drowning you (Poor Stefan.. anyways haha)Rose kicked butt and finally earned her marks! So proud of her, but I'm afraid for her at the same time. She went through so much in this book that I'm sure she's going to have to pay for it later.

St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them.

Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess.
They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger...

Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals.

But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.

My Thoughts:

I LOVED this book! I loved the main character, Rose. I love how she's so kickass and just goes and gets what she wants. It' so much fun to read about a character like that. I like that she isn't selfish though. She's rash and sometimes lets her anger get the better of her, but she also puts other people before herself. I really liked Dimitri as well (how couldn't you?) This world is so new and fun to me :) I must say there are so many new names that I have no idea how to even pronounce, but I'll figure it out.

It's interesting because although the biggest threat would seem to be the Strigoi, there are these little fights inside the academy that at times seem like the biggest issue. (I'm looking at you Mia). Kind of like how Harry Potter's issue is really Voldemort, yet he had issues inside the castle as well (like with Draco).

I'm all about the romance so I really loved the relationships that formed in this book. Not cheesy at all. So cute! When he bought the lipgloss for her though.. so adorable!

I was so shocked by the last few chapters! I love being surprised though :)
Not the biggest fan of the cover.. but it could be worse. Really looking forward to the movie that comes out next year!

I just know that I have to get my hands on Frostbite as soon as possible!
More than likely I'll post a longer discussion video about this.. so more is coming!

Sixteen-year-old Cara Lange has been a loner ever since she moved away from her best and only friend, Zoe, years ago.
She eats lunch with the other girls from the track team, but they're not really her friends.
Mostly she spends her time watching Ethan Gray from a distance, wishing he would finally notice her, and avoiding the popular girls who call her "Choker" after a humiliating incident in the cafeteria.

Then one day Cara comes home to find Zoe waiting for her. Zoe's on the run from problems at home, and Cara agrees to help her hide.
With her best friend back, Cara's life changes overnight. Zoe gives her a new look and new confidence, and next thing she knows, she's getting invited to parties and flirting with Ethan. Best of all, she has her BFF there to confide in.

But just as quickly as Cara's life came together, it starts to unravel.
A girl goes missing in her town, and everyone is a suspect—including Ethan. Worse still, Zoe starts behaving strangely, and Cara begins to wonder what exactly her friend does all day when she's at school.

You're supposed to trust your best friend no matter what, but what if she turns into a total stranger?

My Rating:

My Thoughts:

Where do I begin... This book was very, very disappointing..
I guessed what was happening a couple of chapters in (but I just hoped that I was wrong).
The plot was very predictable.. I don't like books like this at all. I had no idea that this would be so creepy and messed up.

I guess some people might have felt for the main character a bit, but I unfortunately didn't. She didn't have any friends at school, but did you ever see her really try? She was only concerned with trying to get Ethan to like her. She only sat at the table with the other track girls, but I'm sure that there was at least one nice girl in her school that she could have become friends with.

What about her parents though? Cara had AWFUL parents. Knowing what they did.. they left her alone SO much. That's not good for anyone.. I personally think that they may have been avoiding her. They were so edgy around her.

One thing that I did like in the book was the love interest in the story. Ethan wasn't bad. He seemed like a genuinely nice person (whom I found myself feeling really sorry for later in the book). He will definitely be needing therapy..

Poor Samson.. This book reminded me of a bit of the movie Secret Window with Johnny Depp. (That was the only movie that I didn't like with him in it.)
It also reminded me a bit of The Kissed by An Angel series by Elizabeth Chandler (the later books).. both were creepy and not what I like at all.

I don't recommend this book. I'm always so disappointed when I read a book like this because I have SUCH a huge TBR pile and I KNOW there are tons of amazing books in it.. I hate wasting time..

It's so SO rare for me to rate a book like this. I don't think I've rated a book this low since starting my Goodreads account. I'm usually a little TOO star happy and rate almost all books 4 or 5 stars.
This book just wasn't for me.

Being Sloane Jacobs by Lauren Morrill

A new novel about following your dreams . . . and finding your heart from the author of Meant to Be. Meet Sloane Emily Jacobs: a seriously stressed-out figure skater who choked during junior nationals and isn't sure she's ready for a comeback. What she does know is that she'd give anything to escape the mass of misery that is her life.

Now meet Sloane Devon Jacobs, a spunky ice hockey player who's been suspended from her team for too many aggressive hip checks. Her punishment? Hockey camp, now, when she's playing the worst she's ever played. If she messes up? Her life will be over.

When the two Sloanes meet by chance and decide to trade places for the summer, each girl thinks she's the lucky one. But it didn't occur to Sloane E. that while avoiding sequins and axels she might meet a hockey hottie—and Sloane D. never expected to run into a familiar (and very good-looking) face from home. It's not long before the Sloanes discover that convincing people you're someone else might be more difficult than being yourself. - Goodreads

My Rating:

My Thoughts:

I really enjoyed reading this book. I was really in the contemporary mood and this was the perfect book. I didn't want anything too heavy, and so again, this was perfect. This story is so much more than just two girls switching lives for a summer. I thought that the character development was great and I really enjoyed reading about each of their individual journeys.

I really loved that this book centered around ice skating and hockey. I've never been able to stay up on the ice, and so hearing about others do it is amazing to me. Also, I'm not a big fan of watching sports (I'd rather just play them) but hockey is one of the few that I think is SUPER interesting to watch. They just fly across the ice! It's amazing!

There were times when I would get a bit antsy (because each chapter switched back and forth between the two girls) and so at times I wished that I could just jump ahead to whichever story I was finding more interesting at the time. Later, I started to get over that and was enjoying both stories though. I thought that there was going to be a bit more of a build up, some might say that it was a tad anti-climatic, but I still enjoyed it all the same. It was a very enjoyable read.

Interview with Brittany Geragotelis

Brittany Geragotelis is living the dream.

After 10 years of rejection from the publishing industry, she began to post her original novel, Life's a Witch, on the online writing site, Wattpad, hoping that others would enjoy reading her book.

A year after the first upload, the book had received 19 million reads, which caught the attention of Publisher's Weekly, The Huffington Post and The Wall Street Journal.

After building up some buzz in the industry, she hooked up with her agents who instantly received interest from publishers and movie/tv producers.

Within weeks, Life's a Witch went into auction between four major publishing houses, and in the end Brittany landed a 3-book deal with publishing powerhouse, Simon & Schuster.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Brittany Geragotelis this past week, and she was nice enough to send me a copy of "Life's a Witch" as well. I'm now even more eager to read her book after interviewing her and finding out what a fun and relatable person she is!

Tell us 5 Random Facts About Yourself.
1. I got married this year on April Fool’s Day at Disney World.
2. I have Celiac Disease (an auto-immune disease where my body can’t process gluten—wheat, oats, barley & rye). I was diagnosed when I was 26.
3. I’m moving to Hollywood next week after living in New York City for 12 years.
4. I’m obsessed with Catbug from Cartoon Hangover’s show “Bravest Warriors.”
5. I contributed to the Kickstarter campaign to help fund the upcoming “Veronica Mars” movie. You’re welcome world.

Best writing tip you’ve ever received?

My friend and writer/director Jessica Bendinger (author of THE SEVEN RAYS, writer of BRING IT ON and writer/director of STICK IT) told me once that when she was writing her first book, she made collages of her characters and some of the scenes to help show publishers and editors the kind of vibe the book had. Ever since then, I’ve done my own character collages while drafting an outline. I’ll cut out pictures of who would physically play the character in the movie/TV version of the book, clothes they might where, quirks they might have, likes and dislikes…basically, any specifics about the characters that I’ll need to keep in mind when creating them. Then I post it on the wall in my writing area, so I can always visualize who my characters are. It’s beyond helpful.

Published January 29th 2013                           Published July 9th 2013                        Expected Publication Date: Jan. 2014

What’s a typical working day for you? Do you have a favorite place to write?

Well, when I’m actively writing a project, my typical workday is from 9-5, just like if I were going to a day job. I always start off my day by doing maintenance stuff, like running all my social media sites (FacebookTwitterYouTubePinterestWattpad, TumblrBlog), checking e-mail, answering questions and keeping up with industry news.

Then, within my workday, I give myself a writing goal I must meet. So, for instance, I had six weeks to write WHAT THE SPELL, and eight weeks to write THE WITCH IS BACK. These are pretty tight deadlines, so in order to get it done within that timeframe, I had to write about 10 pages a day either 5-7 days a week. I found this was easier than I thought it might be, but that my days varied. Some days I’d hit my goal within a few hours, while other days I was writing until 6pm. Once I’m finished with my goal, I’m done for the day. Then, sometime within that time, I’ll work out, eat lunch and do other chores if I need to.

As for a favorite place to write…I can write anywhere, but my last four books have been written while laying on my couch, laptop on my stomach/lap, with a cat nearby and the TV on in the background. BUT we’re getting ready to move to Los Angeles, and our new place has a loft area that my husband and I are going to set up as a writing nook/office. It’s gonna be awesome!

Who or what inspired you to write?

I think I learned early on just how much storytelling can mean to a person—because it mattered so much to me. Over the years I’ve expanded that list to not only include books, but also movies and TV shows. Being able to teach people something about the world through a story is such an amazing gift. I think that being exposed to great stories (no matter their form) and having them change my life, has inspired me to try and do the same.

What are you working on now?

Well, I’ve got the third book in the LIFE’S A WITCH series, called THE WITCH IS BACK, coming out in January, and then we’re in the middle of pitching another series right now called PAINLESS. In terms of writing, I’ll be writing a book in the new year about a serial killer. And let me tell you…I’m super excited to take a STAB at this project.

You can find Brittany Geragotelis on:

The Witch is Back will be available in January!

Being connected to Daemon Black sucks…

Thanks to his alien mojo, Daemon’s determined to prove what he feels for me is more than a product of our bizarro connection. So I’ve sworn him off, even though he’s running more hot than cold these days. But we’ve got bigger problems.

Something worse than the Arum has come to town…
The Department of Defense are here. If they ever find out what Daemon can do and that we're linked, I’m a goner. So is he. And there's this new boy in school who’s got a secret of his own. He knows what’s happened to me and he can help, but to do so, I have to lie to Daemon and stay away from him. Like that's possible. Against all common sense, I'm falling for Daemon. Hard.

But then everything changes…

I’ve seen someone who shouldn’t be alive. And I have to tell Daemon, even though I know he’s never going to stop searching until he gets the truth. What happened to his brother? Who betrayed him? And what does the DOD want from them—from me?

No one is who they seem. And not everyone will survive the lies…

My Thoughts:

Whew. What a book.. I feel like SO much more happened in this book than in Obsidian. Daemon and Katy's relationship continued (and made me want to pull out my hair most of the time)... but I enjoyed reading this book. There wasn't near as many of those darn Twilight parallels in this one as there was in Obsidian so that made me a lot happier. I felt like it was more original because of that. Overall, I enjoyed this book and recommend it!
The rest of this review will now probably transform itself into more of a rant. (With spoilers.. you've been warned)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AHHH! Okay, so that ending. Wow. Dawson is back?! I can't wait to pick up the third book in this series!
What did you all think of Katy and her powers? When she was feverish and stuff in the beginning of the book I was so confused.. I just kept thinking, can she become an alien? What? It makes a bit more sense that she is just a mutant though. haha

So what about Blake? Did you guys trust him from the beginning? I personally distrusted him from the start because I knew he had an interest in Katy and I only wanted her with Daemon (obviously). I really thought it was strange how he didn't seem to see the branch hovering above his head when Katy stopped it.. I was paranoid and I felt like he was lying to her (which he was). I definitely didn't expect for him to be a mutant himself.. I just wish that Katy would have listened to Daemon and she wouldn't have trusted him. Ugh. Now because of her not listening to Daemon, Adam is dead. So sad...

Did you all suspect Will from the start? I actually was cooled by him for most of the book.. He started acting creepier and creepier and I was just HOPING for Katy and her Mom's sake that I was just being paranoid again.. I'm afraid of how her mom is going to act in this next book when she finds out.. I guess in a way though.. it all ended okay though? Right? I mean, it's not like Katy is still in that disgusting kennel anymore... Daemon took care of that. And they DID get Daemon back, right? Katy did have to go through massive amounts of suffering though.. I'm sure she will never forget that... What do you think will happen to Will? I'm guessing that mutation will take hold and he will connect himself to Daemon and Katy (just because that would suck and right now I feel like that would just be their luck).

I must say, I wasn't TOTALLY in love with Daemon and Katy's romance in this book.. I guess I was just frustrated with Katy mostly.. I thought Daemon was being so cute by trying to woo her, yet she is SO stubborn! I was getting SO sick and tired of her talking about how he didn't really know what he felt and it was all the connection.. blah blah blah. Ugh. JUST KISS HIM ALREADY!

I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next one. I wonder if we will hear from Blake again? My guess is probably.. I'm sure we will be seeing Will as well... I hope that Dee and Katy get back to being friends again.. I missed Dee in this book.

Let me know what you all thought of Onyx in the comments!

Oh! Also, I just read today on the author's blog that there will be new cover designs coming out this upcoming summer! I can't wait to see them!
